چکیده

INDIAN PEDIATRICS 1211 VOLUME 40DECEMBER17, 2003 randomizing infants to CPAP or intubation, the primary outcome being the incidence of Chronic Lung Disease. What would be of interest is to identify variables, which will help recognize babies likely to fail trial of CPAP, so that ventilation could be initiated in them straight away. Non familial juvenile distal spinal muscular atrophy of upper extremity.

An uncommon variety of non familial, juvenile onset, spinal muscular atrophy with asymmetric distal upper extremity affection is described. One hundred and two patients with a one to 14 year follow up are analysed. Spinal muscular atrophies with a distal distribution are rare. However, in the past three decades, previously unrecognised varieties of neurogenic muscular atrophy have been describe...

Hereditary distal spinal muscular atrophy with vocal cord paralysis.

A large kindred is described in which an unusual form of spinal muscular atrophy is segregating in an autosomal dominant manner. The disease presents most commonly in the teens with small muscle wasting in the hands, particularly involving median nerve musculature. Subsequently distal muscle wasting and weakness occur in the lower limbs. Vocal cord paralysis is a characteristic and potentially ...

Non-progressive juvenile spinal muscular atrophy of the distal upper limb (Hirayama's disease): a clinical variant of the benign monomelic amyotrophy.

Hirayama's disease (HD) is frequently found in Asia, and is rarely referred among westerners. It affects young people with higher incidence in males. It is a focal distal amyotrophy with unilateral or asymmetric bilateral involvement of C7, C8 and T1 innervated muscles. HD appears sporadically and has a benign evolution with clinical stabilization in around one year. We report four young male p...

X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (Kennedy's disease) with long-term electrophysiological evaluation: case report.

X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy or Kennedy's disease is an adult-onset motor neuronopathy caused by a CAG repeat expansion within the first exon of an androgen receptor gene. We report the case of a 66-year-old man, previously diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND), who presented acute and reversible left vocal fold (dysphonia) and pharyngeal paresis, followed by a slowly progres...

Congenital cervical spinal muscular atrophy: a non-familial, non progressive condition of the upper limbs.

Two patients with congenital cervical spinal muscular atrophy had symmetrical severe muscle weakness and wasting confined to the upper limbs, areflexia and congenital contractures. The shoulders were internally rotated, elbows extended and wrists flexed. There were no sensory or bulbar symptoms, scoliosis, long tract signs or lower limb involvement. This condition should be regarded as a neurog...
